An excellent visit to HMP Aylesbury today, to see the hard work being done by the governor and staff to improve the prison. I was impressed by the determination to give prisoners new skills to turn around their lives, with a special focus on reading.
The prison is currently recruiting new officers. It's an extremely fulfilling career, with the opportunity to gain responsibility early on. Staff come from all backgrounds, at different stages of their working lives. More information at: prisonandprobationjobs.gov.uk/prison-officer/
I also met the chair of the IMB and Lay Observer recruitment of HMP Aylesbury, which is made up of local volunteers who fulfil a valuable role as the eyes and ears of the community. There are vacancies on the Board - check out imb.org.uk for details on getting involved.
