Today, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, delivered his Autumn Statement, and the measures he announced will put more of your money back where it belongs - in your pockets.
As the economy grows and inflation falls, the time is right to cut taxes. That's why I welcome the decision to reduce National Insurance by 2%, to 10%. This will give the average worker on £35000, an extra £450 a year. NI is also being cut for the self-employed, ending Class 2 and reforming Class 4 contributions. As someone who was self-employed for many years myself, I know that this is great news.
Over the past few months, I've visited many businesses in our town centre. They've asked for help from the Government, especially on business rates. I've passed that message to the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, and today he's delivered. This will be a real boost for shop, bars and restaurants in the town centre.
The Chancellor has also announced other measures to support small firms. That's really important locally, because Bucks has more micro businesses than any other county. Today's announcements will help create new jobs, and strengthen our economy.
On pensions, I am pleased that the triple lock has been maintained and benefits have been uprated by the September inflation figures to ensure the most vulnerable people in Aylesbury are supported.
I also warmly welcome the plans to get more people into work and off benefits. We know that the only way to improve standards of living is through work. It's only fair that those who can work, do work. This Government will support people to make that happen.
