I was very impressed by the work being done by Buckinghamshire Adult Learning when I visited for an Open Day at its centre in Meadowcroft this afternoon.
There are more than 1,000 courses on offer, ensuring there is something suitable for everyone – whatever they have previous qualifications or not. I was especially interested to discover the opportunities for Speakers of Other Languages to learn English, which can help people settle into the local community and enable them to seek employment.
Some of the courses on offer this term cover skills needed to get back into the job market after the pandemic, and a new digital drop-in starts next Monday.
It was particularly good to hear from Colin, who explained the massive benefits he had received from adult learning and courses such as ‘suited, booted and recruited’, building confidence and providing the skills to move from unemployment into full-time work.
Courses are not just geared towards jobs, though – there is also a strong focus on building well-being, including through social prescribing, which is an increasingly important part of healthcare.
