It was a real privilege to join the centennial reunion of the Royal Air Force Halton Apprentices Association on Saturday.
For many decades, RAF apprentices learnt their trades here at Halton, before going on to play a crucial role keeping thousands of the Air Force’s ‘planes airborne around the world. Several hundred “Old Haltonians” gathered to share their memories of training: it was wonderful to see so many strong friendships on show, some of them forged more than 60 years ago.
Lord Trenchard, grandson of the founder of the RAF apprentices, and Group Captain Dan Startup, current station commander at RAF Halton, both gave speeches recognising the contribution of the men who were known as “Trenchard’s Brats”, and a flypast by a Lancaster from Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (Official) was a fitting tribute to their service.
Hearing tales of past exploits and witnessing such incredible camaraderie showed what a special place RAF Halton holds in their hearts, and serves as a timely reminder of the debt we owe our veterans.
