Three weeks ago in Bournemouth, a 17 year old boy and a 12 year old girl drowned in the sea close to the pier. It’s thought there was a sudden riptide.
The girl was called Sunnah Khan and she lived in Buckinghamshire; her mum came to see me on Monday, to ask me to help avoid similar accidents in the future. She said “I believe this is a matter for Parliament to address in how they can make sure this does not happen again”.
Today, as part of Drowning Prevention Week, I raised this tragedy with the Leader of the House of Commons, Penny Mordaunt, and I will now be asking the Speaker’s Office to grant a debate on ways we can make water safer for children as the summer holidays approach.
