The Royal Air Force’s Puma helicopters perform crucial roles at home and abroad, in conflict and in crises. I got to see this first-hand yesterday during my visit to RAF Benson as part of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme. On the visit, I joined a training flight, which included low-level flying, landing in a confined area and a mock winch exercise. I also met some of the dedicated personnel serving our nation, many of whom will soon be deployed abroad. I spoke to members of the junior ranks, pilots and loadmasters about the realities of day-to-day life in the RAF and heard from engineers about the maintenance challenges when deployed. The visit was yet another reminder of our armed forces’ incredible service and contribution to our country.
